Write one paragraph each for why Jack and the Giant both deserve our sympathy.

Jack-

I sympathise with Jack because of his poor family background. He lives with his widowed mother and survives on soup,as mentioned in the text, he even make do without meals. To support his mother and himself, Jack has to milk their cow, Milky-White, and sell them at the market, every morning to earn money for their meals. Seeing that Jack has to go hungry and work hard for his meals, I feel that Jack deserves my sympathy. However, Jack is a very greedy boy as he steals from the Giant from time to time. Although he and his mother are very poor, I feel that he should not take things that do not belong to him. He stole the Giant's gold and lived off it for sometime. Jack once again returned to the Giant's house and stole more valuables from the Giant, and even chopped down the beanstalk which caused the Giant's death. From here, we can see that Jack is greedy and rather selfish. Although he killed the Giant, it was out of self defence as the Giant feeds on poor englishmen. Moreover, he stole the Giant's valuables in desperate needs to support his mother and himself, therefore, I sympathise with Jack.

Giant-

I sympathise with the Giant as he got killed when he was trying his best to get his hard earned valuables back. Jack stole one of the Giant's bag of gold and lived off it, after he and his mother used up that bag of gold, he bodly returned once again to steal from the Giant. Living off someone's hardwork is very despicable and therefore I sympathise with the Giant. The Giant loves to eat englishmen and I feel that he is not in the wrong to have a personal liking for englishmen as food. The Giant did not feed off his own kind and englishmen is probably just chicken and meat to him, hence I feel that he is not cruel or mean to take away innocent lives as we ourself feed on chickens, fishes or any other animal. If the Giant is being judged as cruel this way, we ourselves are no different from the Giant. The Giant died when he fell off the beanstalk while trying to get back his valuables, I feel that this is unfair for the Giant, hence, i sympathise with him.

Do you sympathise with the Joker?

No, I do not sympathise with the Joker as the Joker finds pleasure in harming and killing others, despite knowing that the crimes he committed is wrong and not willing to repent or change his ways, even though he had a bad family background.

From my research and knowledge, the Joker had a tramautising past and therefore, resulted in his unstable mental condition and his wicked and cruel thoughts. For example, in one of the scenes showed in The Dark knight, The Joker lead a few men to rob a bank and tricked them into believing that by killing one another, their own portion of the loot would be greater. The other robbers were then killing one another, not knowing that Joker were robbing the bank with them. In the end, the Joker killed the few remaining robbers and escaped in the school bus with all the money for himself. As he knew that by escaping through a school bus during the after school period, he would not be easily caught. Through here, we can see that The Joker is a cruel, self-centered and cunning killer, who breaks the law numerously without batting an eyelid. Taking away innocent lives, tricking people into helping him with his evil ways and not showing mercy or gratitude to his accomplices, therefore, The Joker does not deserve my sympathy.

In the movie The Dark Knight, The Joker announced that until Batman reveals his identity, the citizens of Gotham will die each and everyday, as Joker was being paid to kill Batman and Lau, a chinese mafia member who was being arrested by Batman and agrees to testify against the mob, in retaliation, the mob hires Joker to kill the both of them. To meet his goal and earn money, Joker caused the people of Gotham to kill each other, causing them to blame Batman for landing them into such a dangerous state, prompting Batman to reveal his true identity. Through here, we can tell that Joker is cunning and smart. He not only harms the citizens of Gotham but also forces them into hating the hero whom had been saving and protecting the city. This shows that he is a monstrous and notorious killer. His plan in causing the city of Gotham to blame batman stresses that he is cunning, his wrong doings do not deserve my sympathy.

The Joker has a tramautising childhood, and that maybe the reason to his unstable mental condition. From my research, when the Joker was young, his dunkard father constantly abused his mother. One night, his father was yet again abusing his mother and saw Joker shaking in a corner, tearing. His father hence said, " Why so serious?" and carved Joker's face into a shape of a smile with a knife. Another story was, he had a wife who had cuts on her and didn't had the money to go for plastic surgery. He stuck a razor blade in his mouth to show that he didn't mind the cuts, but his wife could not stand the sight of him and left him. I feel sorry for him but nonetheless, harming others cannot solve his problems and this does not give him the excuse to constantly break the law.

In conclusion, the Joker is a deranged and flat out psychotic killer. He views muder as sport, and will not hesitate to toy with his food before he eats it, even if said the food are the men he hired to work for him. His methods are unpredictable and incalculable. He instills anarchy in the people of Gotham by any means necessary, proving that organization is meaningless and futile. He is an exceptionally intelligent man who applies his intelligence to commit crimes and turns to the dark side. After analysing and concluding, i do not sympathise with the Joker.

What have you learnt from this lesson?

I have learnt that not all heroes are perfect or all villians are meant to commit crimes all their lives, it is a matter of choosing your own path in society and applying your strong traits for good and not to satisfy one's greed or anger. I have also learnt not to judge a book by its cover. Batman may always seem to wear a mask, be covered in black and comes out at night, but that does not mean he is a notorious killer. On the other hand, Joker looks like a clown and has a very terrifying look, but Joker has gone through alot during his childhood and that does not mean he was borned to kill. We can only judge a person through their actions or their speech. Last but not least, good and evil exists in this world, nothing is perfect. Good may conquer evil while evil may take over good. This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.
